Why We Chose Home Depot Cabinets over Ikea Cabinets

When we started our kitchen renovation, we were almost certain that we were going to buy our cabinets from Ikea. We were working within a pretty tight budget, and we knew other people who had and loved their Ikea kitchens. Since we were taking multiple trips to Home Depot each week anyway, we decided to check out what they had to offer too. We're glad we did, as we ultimately went with Home Depot settled on the American Woodmark cabinets from Home Depot. Here are the 3 things that ultimately swayed us.
They had more options. One of my biggest concerns with the Ikea cabinets was the door options. Ikea had the standard flat front doors, which we felt were way too modern for our 1920's house, and shaker style doors, which just weren't our style. The color options were also very limited. We looked into doing customized doors from companies like Semi Handmade, and while they did offer more color choices (or at least easier to paint doors), the options still felt limiting. We ended up choosing the American Woodmark Brookland doors, which fit in better with the style we were going for.
It was much easier to create our own layout. We found the Ikea online kitchen layout tool incredibly difficult to use. I can't speak to in-person appointments, as they weren't offering them due to covid restrictions, but we did have a phone appointment. Due to high demand, we had to schedule the appointment weeks in advance, and only had time to create one design. We initially met with a Home Depot rep in-store, and then communicated with him via email for a couple weeks after. He created at least 4 different designs for us (some that were VERY different from where we ended up). It was so easy - we just had to tell him what things we wanted done and he moved things around accordingly and made suggestions. We would've never ended up with our current layout without that service!
They were really comparably priced! All in all, the difference in cost between Ikea cabinets and the cabinets we ended up with was less than $1,000. That doesn't include what the additional cost would have been if we had ended up buying cabinet doors from a different company. We also had several special elements, like double wide toe kicks and soft close doors and drawers. For the customizations we were getting (and the fact that they came pre-assembled!) it was a no-brainer on cost.
We installed our cabinets in December, and even though it's only been 3 months it's safe to say we love them!
